Trézor® — Getting Started

A clear, secure, and friendly walkthrough to set up your Trézor® hardware wallet
Version: 1.0 • Secure Setup

Welcome — You’re one step away from owning your keys

Congratulations on choosing Trézor®. This page guides you through a secure, step-by-step setup so you can start managing your crypto safely. The instructions below are designed for clarity: read carefully, follow every step, and never skip writing down or verifying your recovery seed. Treat your recovery as the single most important secret — it’s the key to restore access to your funds.

Step 1 — Unbox & inspect

When you receive your Trézor®, verify the tamper-evident seal and packaging. The box should not show signs of damage or resealing. If anything looks suspicious, contact the vendor or the official TreZor® support channels immediately; don’t connect the device or enter sensitive information.

  • Package intact and seal unbroken
  • Included items: device, USB cable, quick start guide, recovery card (if supplied)
  • Never receive a recovery seed pre-filled by a third party

Step 2 — Connect and power

Connect Trézor® to your computer using the included USB cable. The device will show a welcome screen and prompt you to visit the official setup URL. Always type the URL manually: avoid links sent over email or social media.

Tip: Where possible, use a freshly installed browser profile or a machine you trust for the initial setup.

Step 3 — Initialize

The device will offer two options: create a new wallet or recover existing. If this is your first time, choose Create new. The device will generate a recovery seed — a human-readable list of words — using its internal entropy source. Write these words down exactly in the order shown, on the supplied recovery card or a secure metal backup option.

  • Never store the seed as a photo, text file, or cloud backup
  • Consider a metal backup plate for long-term durability
  • Trézor® will ask you to confirm your seed after writing it down — do so carefully

Step 4 — Set a PIN

Choose a strong PIN to protect local access to your device. The PIN is used to unlock the device before performing any transaction. Pick a length and combination you can remember, but avoid common patterns or trivial sequences.

If someone tries to brute-force the PIN, the device intentionally delays attempts — this makes guessing impractical.

Step 5 — Install Apps & firmware

Open the official Trézor® suite on your computer or the recommended companion app. The software will check firmware integrity and guide you through updates. Only accept firmware updates that are signed and delivered through the official channel. Installing unauthorized firmware risks loss of funds.

Step 6 — Receive your first transaction

To receive coins, open the account for the desired cryptocurrency in the companion app. Copy the receiving address and verify it on the device display before sharing it. Confirmation on the hardware ensures your address wasn’t altered by malware.

  • Always verify the full address on-device
  • Use smaller test transactions when sending large amounts for the first time

Security best practices

Treat your Trézor® like a bank vault: physical security matters. Keep the device and the recovery seed in separate, secure locations. Never share your seed or PIN with anyone. Beware of phishing attacks asking for your seed or software that asks you to export private keys.

  • Use a hardware wallet for long-term storage
  • Keep software and firmware updated from official sources
  • Use passphrase protection if you need plausible deniability (advanced users)

Advanced: Passphrase & hidden wallets

Trézor® supports an optional passphrase. This is an extra word or phrase added to your recovery seed to create hidden wallets. A passphrase increases security but also increases responsibility: if you forget it, your funds may be irretrievable. Use passphrases only if you understand the consequences.

Recovering from seed

If your Trézor® is lost or damaged, you can restore your wallet on a new compatible device by selecting Recover wallet and entering your written recovery seed. Always verify the restore process on a fresh device and double-check addresses after recovery.
